Welcome to EDG 4410 Teaching Strategies and Classroom Management! This is a general methods course geared primarily to address the needs of secondary education, exceptional education, and K-12 education majors/minors such as world languages education, music education, and art education.

In this course, you will be exposed to various instructional delivery techniques and organizational and management skills that promote the development of a classroom community. You will learn how to create detailed lesson plans which you will implement during two microteaches. You will learn how to critique your performance during your microteaches. You will also learn about classroom management strategies and how to write a syllabus for your future students.

You will participate in a field experience that consists of five hours of teaching Junior Achievement lessons and ten hours of service learning. It is expected that this experience will further familiarize you with the school climate and impact your decision to continue to pursue the teaching profession as your career.

As the expectations and challenges of the teaching profession continue to grow each year, I have found that the previous format of this class did not provide enough time for students to engage meaningfully, deeply, and interactively in the content and strategies in an unhurried fashion. I have recently significantly restructured this course in order to provide you with the greatest number of different experiences in as efficient a format as possible. The new format is a modified flipped class. According to Jon Bergmann, Jerry Overmyer, and Brett Wilie (http://www.thedailyriff.com/articles/the-flipped-class-conversation-689.php), a flipped class is:
  • A means to INCREASE interaction and personalized contact time between students and teachers.
  • An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning.
  • A classroom where the teacher is not the "sage on the stage", but the "guide on the side".
  • A blending of direct instruction with constructivist learning.
  • A class where all students are engaged in their learning.
  • A place where all students can get a personalized education.

Please view the following videos for additional information on the format of a flipped classroom:
Video 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojiebVw8O0g (approximately 3 minutes long)
Video 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_p63W_2F_4 (approximately 7 minutes long)

Given what you have just read and viewed above about flipped learning, you should now realize that you will be expected to take responsibility for your learning and be fully prepared for each class so that you will be able to actively participate in each week's in-class activities. This format will require you to not only complete readings from articles and my notes, but also view video clips, check out specified websites, and complete other tasks prior to class each week. As you view videos, read my notes, visit websites, etc., it is recommended that you take your own notes. Some students find using the Cornell Notes system to be very helpful in capturing the essence of what they are learning. For information about this system, please view the following video. The video was created by another professor, so any references to her class assignments and projects don't pertain to you. If you don't want to create your own template, I've also included below two different versions of Cornell Notes templates.

Class time will typically be spent engaged in highly interactive activities that are based on what you learned preparing for the class. In order to be able to fully participate in and contribute to the class activities, you will need to complete tasks specified prior to the class session each week. Some class sessions will be dedicated to working on parts of some of your assignments. For those class sessions, it would behoove you to bring your laptop or some device with a word processing program.

You are also encouraged to participate in professional development opportunities. One of the largest professional development programs in the UCF College of Education and Human Performance is KnightsEd Talks (formerly HAPPY Hour) at KnightsEdTalks.
